Gotcha!

Once you have determined there are rodents in your home and have pinpointed possible sources and entry points, the next step is to properly place baits and set traps.

Always use baits in accordance with instructions on the package. Baits are safe and highly effective if used according to directions.

Generally speaking, baits should be used in low traffic, hard-to-reach areas such as basements, garages and attics to avoid any accidental exposure to kids or pets. Baits are an ideal way to avoid contact with rodents, because once they've eaten the bait, they leave the area to die.

Baits

Set baits close to walls and in dark corners, such as behind the stove, refrigerator, washer and dryer. Multiple baiting is a good strategy because mice are nibblers by nature. Be sure bait stations are not accessible to children or pets.

Discard wet, dirty or contaminated bait, and replace what has been consumed. Once a rodent problem has been cleared up, continue baiting areas to help avoid reoccurrence.

Traps

Traps, on the other hand, are ideal for high traffic areas where baits might be a risk for pets or children. Place them in areas where you see or suspect mice. Peanut butter, nuts and – of course – cheese effectively lure mice to traps. Check the traps often. If rodents are not caught in 4-5 days, move the traps to a new location. Always place traps perpendicular to the wall.
